Clayson and the argonauts
As I have said elsewhere, the decision to join Clayson and the Argonauts in 2005, following a recommendation from drummer Alan ‘the Robespierre of Rhythm’ Barwise, came at a critical time when the normal means of addressing the male menopause would have been to buy a motor bike. Instead, I joined a rock band – and what a rock band!
Led by the legendary Alan Clayson, the Argonauts defy succinct description – review comments range from ‘Clayson and the Argonauts are one of rock's most glorious and enjoyable follies, and somewhere there is a parallel universe where they are bigger than the Beatles’ - Rock 'N' Reel through ‘Clayson is in a premier position on rock's lunatic fringe’ - Melody Maker and ‘His delivery and performance style has led to a deserved cult status’ - Time Out to my own particular favourite description ‘Clayson and his R&B fuelled punk rock urchins’ - Time Out. And in this age of tribute and cover bands it’s all original material.
This was revolutionary for a boy whose most rocky moment hitherto had been to use the Hammond Organ setting on the keyboard when playing Horse’s Brawl at a barn dance! It also meant appearances at some of the rock world’s most iconic venues – The 100 Club (twice), The Metro in Oxford Street, The Dublin Castle in Camden, The Dirty Water Club in Tufnell Park and a range of other venues across the South East and beyond.
Recent output includes a CD ‘This Cannot Go On’ available to buy and stream via Amazon, Spotify etc and launched in July of 2019 a vinyl maxi-single available from Hookah Records.
In 2022 we decided that we had grown up and the band ceased to operate as a going concern, but for more information see the Alan Clayson's website here.
